American Interior Decorators and
Decorating Styles & Methods
Interiors of an
American household are fast on the move, just like
everything else in the country. There was a time when
the look was earthier and rustic, using only plain wood
to do up most of the furnishing. Now, with the changing
architectural trends, the tastes of people are also fast
changing. There is many more colours and patterns to
experiment with now than ever before. The rustic look is
being replaced by a more suave, refined taste with well
polished and painted furniture.
Some pieces of
furniture, however, always remain classic. We suggest
that you not throw away all the old chests or trundle
beds that you might have. They may be old fashioned for
your taste, but they have a charm of their own. If
re-made well, they can add a touch of class to your
interior. It is true that there are very few people or
contractors who know the art of revamping an old piece
of furniture so that it both looks trendy as wells as
retains its old charm. In this case you would want to
have some ideas of your own so that you can direct them
as to what you want to do.
Wood is once
again in vogue. You can throw out the unrefined look and
go in for well-polished wooden furniture and flooring.
It is a very good way of making your home look
‘natural’.
While
decorating your house, we suggest you never lose sight
of how much you are willing to spend. Everything can be
obtained within your budget, no matter what it is.
Scrounge flea markets and garage sales, and other
discount sales during festival time. You can purchase
old furniture second hand. Also, if that is a design
that you have liked very much, you can have it
replicated by your own contractor, and even have it
modified to suit your tastes. A replica will certainly
cost less than the original.
For more
information you can always consult articles and material
by organizations such as the American Society for
Interior Designers (ASID) or the Interior Design
Educators Council (IDEC). These have been around for
40-50 years and comprise of members spread throughout
the USA and Canada, to places such as Oklahoma, South
Carolina, Tennessee, New Jersey, New Hampshire,
Missouri, Michigan, Tennessee, Nevada, Mississippi,
North Carolina, Rhode Island, Arkansas, South Dakota,
etc. These organizations basically encourage the
professionals in the interior design field to study and
research. Apart from these, there is also the Interior
Design Society set up in 1973 that works towards similar
aims.
